Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  July 25, 2009

ProfessorD.us denounces President Obama’s apology to James Crowley, the cop who arrested Prof. Gates in his own house, as “a bitch move.”

Obama’s Apology Reinforces White Supremacism

Obama’s back-pedaling July 24 2009, by issuing a de facto apology to the cop who arrested Prof. Gates in his own house, was a bitch move.  Obama caved to pressure from police organizations and retracted his true sentiment and accurate judgment that the officer acted stupidly.  Obama’s compensatory remark that “both sides overreacted” is not only meaningless to the dispute but detrimental to the underlying issue.  Such statements are examples of comments without content; politically calculated alternatives to “no comment.”  You see this technique employed often regarding the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.  Such comments avoid taking any position and therefore serve to reinforce the racist status quo.  Whether or not Professor Gates overreacted “as well” is completely irrelevant to the matter.  The job of an Officer is to enforce the law, not to teach people lessons or manners.  If you can’t get spit on in the line of duty and maintain your composure you have no business being a police officer.  The abuse of authority exercised by Officer Crowley is indisputable and Obama’s retreat from his just position is a disappointing (though not surprising) eye-opener.  Seeing how easily the President caves to the “sound of the police” should snap us out of any silly dreams we may have had about just pardons for Sister Assata and Brother Mumia, or any significant challenge whatsoever to the embedded white supremacism of the Amerikkkan power structure.
